The third article of the Constitution of 1917 decreed that the education given in official and private primary schools would be secular. This left Catholic schools in a dilemma. On the one hand, they had to adjust to this legal framework to have official recognition of their studies. However, they were not willing to renounce their religious identity since their purpose was to educate their students about the Catholic faith. For this reason, they designed a series of tactics that consisted of teaching their religious doctrine in a hidden or discreet manner. The objective of this thesis is to analyze how Catholic primary schools in Guadalajara operated between 1917 and 1934. For this purpose, a case study was designed, with a qualitative approach, where documents such as government and school reports, laws and regulations, pamphlets, correspondence, life stories, newspaper articles, photographs, and urban plans, among others, were analyzed. On the other hand, the Church and State conflict, which developed in Mexico between 1917 and 1940, conditioned the function of Catholic primary schools in Guadalajara. For this reason, the first chapter will describe the most important events of that period. The second will describe the operation of these schools between 1917 and 1934. Finally, the third chapter will analyze their physical spaces, to know the places where they were established, the type of students they were aimed at, and the activities that took place there. Likewise, the teachers and parents involved in these establishments will be studied.
