The thesis that I present is born from distrust and suspicion in the face of a dichotomy observed in the Argonautics of Apollonius of Rhodes: the voice of the sirens (who are monstrous women) is bad and that of Orpheus is good. In this text, Orpheus' music represents the social order and the virile force of dominating and defeating others who are considered enemies, among them, the sirens, who are characterized as women with bird bodies. Reflecting on what the music of the sirens represents is the objective of this thesis. Wondering why mermaids should be censored or punished in ancient myths (Argonautics, Odyssey, Orphic Argonautics, Metamorphoses, History of Greece), why they are designated as monsters and considered evil by mythical heroes, what elements are contained by the songs of the sirens and characterize them, etc., I have found through Plato, Quignard and the myths themselves, that their monstrosity arises, at least in part, from the bewilderment in the face of a non-normative voice and pleasure and, in that sense, the transgression and disruption of the social order. Furthermore, this transgression of listening to the voice of the sirens or even creating a siren song is accompanied, at least under certain conditions, by the possibility of wisdom and knowledge beyond the limits of verbal discourse and the norms that culture has imposed on our possibilities of knowing. Finally, I hope that my thesis can become a first step towards a work of appreciation and vindication of ancient and contemporary sirens, as well as their songs.
La tesis que presento nace de la desconfianza y sospecha ante una dicotomía observada en las Argonáuticas de Apolonio de Rodas: la voz de las sirenas (que son mujeres monstruosas) es mala y la de Orfeo es buena. En este texto, la música de Orfeo representa el orden social y la fuerza viril de dominar y vencer a los otros que son considerados enemigos, entre ellos, las sirenas, que son caracterizadas como mujeres con cuerpo de pájaro. Reflexionar acerca de lo que la música de las sirenas representa es el objetivo de esta tesis. Preguntándome por qué las sirenas deben ser censuradas o castigadas en los mitos antiguos (Argonáuticas, Odisea, Argonáuticas órficas, Metamorfosis, Historia de Grecia), por qué son señaladas como monstruos y consideradas malignas por los héroes míticos, qué elementos contienen y caracterizan los cantos de las sirenas, etc., he encontrado de la mano de Platón, Quignard y los mitos mismos, que su monstruosidad surge, al menos en parte, del desconcierto ante una voz y un placer no normativos y, en ese sentido, transgresor y disruptivo del orden social. Además, esta transgresión de escuchar la voz de las sirenas o, incluso, de crear un canto de sirena, se acompaña, al menos en ciertas condiciones, de la posibilidad de sabiduría y conocimiento más allá de los límites del discurso verbal y de las normas que la cultura ha impuesto nuestras posibilidades de conocer. Por último, espero que mi tesis pueda llegar a ser un primer paso para un trabajo de apreciación y reivindicación de las sirenas antiguas y contemporáneas, así como de sus cantos.
