Inhalants are substances that are volatile at room temperature and are administered by inhalation in order to alter consciousness and mood without causing intoxication (Dinwiddie, 1994). Inhalants cause a rapid euphoria much like that produced by alcohol, with initial excitement followed by drowsiness, disinhibition, lightheadedness, and agitation. If large amounts are inhaled, anesthesia can usually occur. Inhalants produce dependence and withdrawal syndrome when their consumption is suspended
Los inhalables son sustancias volátiles a temperatura ambiente y que se administran por inhalación con el fin de alterar la conciencia y estado de ánimo sin causar intoxicación (Dinwiddie, 1994). Los inhalables provocan una euforia rápida muy similar a la producida por el alcohol, con una excitación inicial seguida por somnolencia, desinhibición, aturdimiento y agitación. Si se inhalan grandes cantidades generalmente se puede producir anestesia. Los inhalables producen dependencia y síndrome de abstinencia cuando se suspende su consumo.
