For centuries the ocean has been able to withstand natural pollution and the actions of human society without undergoing major changes, but since the beginning of the 20th century human activities have increased, reaching such a level that they can seriously disturb the life cycles of the marine/coastal environment and put all of its biological diversity is at risk. The term "pollution of aquatic systems", in general, encompasses harmful effects caused by man through actions such as discharges of toxic and/or radioactive substances, solid and scattered waste, etc.
Durante siglos el océano ha podido soportar la contaminación natural y actuación de la sociedad humana sin sufrir grandes modificaciones, pero desde inicio del siglo XX las actividades humanas se han incrementado alcanzando tal nivel que pueden perturbar gravemente los ciclos vitales del ambiente marino/costero y poner en peligro toda su diversidad biológica. El término “contaminación de los sistemas acuáticos”, en general, abarca efectos nocivos ocasionados por el hombre mediante acciones como son los vertidos de sustancias tóxicas y/o radiactivas, de desechos sólidos y dispersos, etc.
