Pitahaya has characteristics suitable for agriculture because the plant can be fully exploited and successfully cultivated in areas where climatic and edaphic conditions are not suitable for more demanding crops. The pitahaya fruit, considered as exotic, is accepted in the market with high prices both in the country and internationally. Pitahaya can represent an economic livelihood. The agronomic management of pitahaya can enhance its yield. Thus, the use of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus (N and P) contribute to plant development. The objective was to evaluate the effect of different doses of N and P on response variables such as height, stem diameter, length, shoot diameter and heat accumulation in two pitahaya variables. Two varieties were used: Selenicereus megalanthus (Lem.) Britton & Rose, Hylocereus monacanthus (Salm) Britton & Rose and three doses of N and P (0, 75 and 150 kg ha-1), generating six treatments. The variables were analyzed with SAS at 0.05 probability. The average minimum and maximum temperature were 19 and 37 °C and the heat accumulation was 1912 UC. The varieties Selenicereus megalanthus and Hylocereus monacanthus respond positively to the application of high doses of N and P, 150,150 kg ha-1, where the highest values were presented for the variable plant height, stem diameter and shoot length. While the lowest values were found where these nutrients were not applied. Thus, the application of these nutrients as part of crop management is recommended to favor plant development.
