Abstract

Empathy is the effort we make to recognize and understand people's feelings and attitudes, as well as the circumstances that affect them at a given time. It is very common to hear that empathy is the tendency or attitude we have to put ourselves in the place of others and fully identify with their feelings. However, this risks leaving empathy on a merely emotional level: "if I feel the same as the other, then there is true empathy". The reality is that empathy is not the product of the good mood with which we wake up, nor of the affection that binds us to people. If this combination were common, we would always be available to listen to others and we would momentarily leave our occupations, thoughts and concerns to attend to those around us.

La empatía es el esfuerzo que realizamos para reconocer y comprender los sentimientos y actitudes de las personas, así como las circunstancias que los afectan en un momento determinado. Es muy común escuchar que la empatía es la tendencia o actitud que tenemos para ponernos en el lugar de los demás e identificarnos plenamente con sus sentimientos. Sin embargo, esto tiene el riesgo de dejar a la empatía en un nivel meramente emocional: "si siento lo mismo que el otro, entonces hay verdadera empatía". La realidad es que la empatía no es el producto del buen humor con que despertamos, como tampoco del afecto que nos une a las personas. Si esta combinación fuera común, siempre estaríamos disponibles para escuchar a los demás y dejaríamos momentáneamente nuestras ocupaciones, pensamientos y preocupaciones para atender a quienes nos rodean.
