The correct production of flowers in plants is key to their sexual reproduction and depends on the floral transition, in which the plant moves from a vegetative state, where it produces stems and leaves, to a reproductive state where flowers are produced. At the cellular level, the floral transition occurs in the apical meristems of the stem, which are cellular structures located at the tip of each stem and made up of undifferentiated cells. These structures are responsible for producing new stem organs. During the floral transition, the meristem changes from a vegetative state to a state of inflorescence. When in a vegetative state, the meristem produces leaves and stems, while when in a state of inflorescence, the meristem has the ability to produce meristems in a floral state. For their part, meristems in a floral state will transform into a flower by producing floral organs. The floral transition is regulated by multiple flowering-inducing signals, such as changes in light, temperature, nutrients, or plant age, which converge on molecules called floral integrators, also known as florigen. The FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) gene is probably the main floral integrator, as it responds to all the main flowering induction pathways. The FT protein is produced in leaves and then transported to the apical meristems of the plant stem, where it induces flowering by inducing a change in the genetic expression of meristematic cells. Thanks to multiple studies conducted on the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, it has now been possible to model the Genetic Regulation Network (GRN) behind the floral transition in this species. This GRN includes the genes and hormones that define whether the meristem is in a vegetative, inflorescence, or floral state.

El gen FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) es probablemente el principal integrador floral, ya que responde a todas las principales vías de inducción de floración.
