| dc.description.abstract | In Mexico, berry crops (strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, and blueberry) have gained considerable relevance due to their high nutritional and commercial value. The European pepper moth, Duponchelia fovealis Zeller (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), was reported for the first time in 2018 in strawberry crops in Tangancícuaro, Michoacán. Despite the high phytosanitary risk posed by this pest, information on D. fovealis in Mexico remains scarce; therefore, further research is required to understand its biology, ecology, and behavior. One of the first steps is to know about the possible variations this insect has undergone during its adaptation to new areas. In this study, the morphological and genetic variation of two Mexican populations (Michoacán and Guanajuato) and one foreign population (Brazil) of D. fovealis was determined. For this, the linear and geometric morphometry of the wings was analyzed, as well as a fragment of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. For the determination of morphological variation, the right forewings and hindwings of D. fovealis individuals from the three populations (10 pairs per population) were analyzed. Linear morphometric analysis was based on measurements of wing length and width. For the geometric morphometric analysis, 22 and 16 landmarks were established on the forewings and hindwings, respectively. Results from the linear morphometric analysis showed that, in most cases, females from the Brazil and Guanajuato populations exhibited larger wing dimensions than those from the Michoacán population, while males showed no significant differences between populations. Moreover, the geometric morphometric analysis of the hindwing shape proved to be a discriminant morphological character among the three D. fovealis populations. The genetic studies were performed using 10 larvae from each population. The analysis revealed differentiation between the most geographically distant populations (Mexico and Brazil) and low intrapopulation variation.
| es_MX |
