This paper delves into material culture studies by revisiting the significance of transpacific trade, specifically through the Manila Galleon commercial route. This route paved the way for new commercial networks within the territory of New Spain, effectively transforming the viceroyalty into a globalized space. Building upon this context, the research aims to analyze the circulation, adaptation, and reinterpretation of objects such as the folding screen (biombo). Originating in Asia and establishing a continued presence in various territories across the Americas and Europe, these objects held a profound symbolic value for the eighteenth-century oligarchy in New Spain. This study proposes an analysis of the folding screen titled “Entrada de un rey español a Madrid” (Entry of a Spanish King into Madrid). From the perspective of cultural history, it compares local techniques, such as maque, with Asian-influenced techniques like lacquer work. Through this lens, the folding screen is understood not merely as a decorative object, but as an active agent within social and cultural processes. Ultimately, the paper concludes that these artifacts not only serve as evidence of global exchange processes, but also functioned as mechanisms for social and political legitimation. They reflect the local appropriation of Eastern aesthetic models and the reaffirmation of identities and hierarchies within the society of New Spain.
El siguiente trabajo se adentra en los estudios de la cultura material, retomando la importancia del comercio transpacífico a partir de la ruta comercial del Galeón de Manila, dando paso a nuevas rutas comerciales dentro del territorio novohispano y así mismo convirtiendo a dicho virreinato como un espacio globalizado. Partiendo desde este contexto la investigación pretende analizar la circulación, adaptación y reinterpretación de objetos como el biombo cuyo origen fue Asía, permaneciendo en diversos territorios de América y Europa, mismo que tuvieron un valor simbólico para la oligarquía novohispana del siglo XVIII. Se propone un análisis del biombo Entrada de un rey español a Madrid comparando las técnicas locales como el maque con las de influencia oriental asiática como la laca, tomando una perspectiva de la Historia cultural, entendiendo al biombo no sólo como un objeto decorativo, sino un actor dentro de los procesos sociales y culturales. Concluyendo que estos artefactos no solo comprueban procesos de intercambio global, sino que funcionaron como mecanismos de legitimación social y política, reflejando la apropiación local de modelos estéticos orientales y la reafirmación de identidades y jerarquías dentro de la sociedad novohispana.
