Vistiendo a la reina de Tierra Llana. Indumentaria y devoción a la Virgen de la Purísima Concepción de Celaya

Abstract

The Virgin of La Purísima Concepcion wich is an Immaculate Concepcion, patroness of Celaya, was brought from the Iberian Peninsula to New Spain in 1577. At first, she was a simple wooden sculpture with her garments painted onto the figure. Her first great miracle was recorded in the seventeenth century. Between those years and the eighteenth century, jewels began to be donated to adorn her, as votive offerings of gratitude from Celaya society for the favors and miracles received. She was modified in the nineteenth century so that she could be dressed in garments of silk, silver, and velvet, while donations of pearls and precious stones continued, until 1909, when she was canonically crowned in confirmation of the devotion she inspired.

La Virgen de la Purísima Concepción, patrona de Celaya, la trajeron de la península ibérica a Nueva España en 1577, al principio era una escultura de madera simple con la ropa pintada sobre ella. Se registró su primer gran milagro en el siglo XVII, entre esos años y el siglo XVIII le empiezan a donar joyas para adornarla, a manera de exvoto de gratitud de la sociedad celayense, por los favores y milagros recibidos. La modificaron en el siglo XIX para vestirla con ropa de seda, plata y terciopelo, mientras continuaron las donaciones de perlas y piedras preciosas, hasta 1909 cuando la coronaron canónicamente para confirmar la devoción.
