dc.description.abstract This research deals with the secularization of the doctrine of Charo, founded in 1550 by the Order of St. Augustine, to attend spiritually to the Matlatzinca Indians, in the only territory in Michoacán that formed part of the State and Marquisate of the Valley of Oaxaca. Secularization, understood as the act of transferring the parishes administered by the regular clergy to the hands of the secular clergy, was part of a project conceived by the Spanish absolutist government, which gained great momentum in the second half of the 18th century. The temporal axis in which this investigation is inscribed, corresponds to the years 1758, after the doctrine of Charo was vacant due to the death of its last religious pastor Fray Joseph Ramirez, until 1787, when the secular occupation was concluded. The research begins with the origin and development of the doctrine, and in the following chapters the process of secularization is analyzed, not only in terms of its objectives and application, but also in terms of its consequences, which caused its decline. en
