Identidades afrodescendientes. Historias de mujeres afro en Morelia

Abstract

This thesis examines the construction and re-signification of Afro-descendant identities among nine professional women graduates from the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo. The main objective is to analyze how these women rethink their identities in Morelia, a city where an Afro-descendant presence is not readily recognized. The research is framed within intersectional and qualitative approaches, employing the life history method as the central strategy for data production. Through biographical narratives focused on understanding each participant’s Afro-descendant experience, the study recovers the experiences, memories, and meanings they attribute to their identities. This approach allows for a deeper understanding of both the subjective and social dimensions of self-identification processes. Overall, this thesis contributes to making visible the experiences of Afro-descendant women in urban contexts and to problematizing hegemonic narratives surrounding identity, ethnicity, and gender in Michoacán.

La presente tesis examina la construcción y resignificación de las identidades afrodescendientes en nueve mujeres profesionistas egresadas de la Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo. El objetivo principal es analizar cómo estas mujeres repiensan su identidad en Morelia, una ciudad donde no es reconocible una presencia afro. La investigación se inscribe en los enfoques interseccional y cualitativo, utiliza el método de historia de vida como estrategia central para la producción de datos. A partir de relatos biográficos enfocados en conocer la experiencia afrodescendiente en cada una de ellas, se recuperan las experiencias, memorias y significados que las participantes atribuyen a su identidad, lo que permite comprender la dimensión subjetiva y social de los procesos de autoidentificación. En conjunto, la tesis contribuye a visibilizar las experiencias de mujeres afrodescendientes en contextos urbanos y a problematizar las narrativas hegemónicas sobre identidad, etnicidad y género en Michoacán.
