Las ciencias psi en México. La psicología y la conformación del Estado (de la metafísica liberal a la psicología del mexicano)

Abstract

In Mexico, during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, psychology was a complex, equivocal term that refereed the same thing to philosophical thinking — or, as the liberal, metaphysical elites were designating — that a new psychic depth that science was putting to Discovered. From the Hygienics, the Alienism and the reflections around the nervous system and the brain as a material basis of the functions assigned by the old philosophy to the soul, begins to configure a psychological man, which will become the object of multiple studies On the part of a new mind specialist. This transition from philosophy to science will imply the emergence not only of a duly differentiated discipline, aimed at studying the mental processes and behavior of the individual and the population, but the interweaving between the professional of the psyche and the State. The articulation between these soul scientists and the ruling elites will be complex, resulting in a circulation of ideas, theories and projects from one field to the other. Thus, a psychological knowledge will participate in the projects of nation in Mexico in the nineteenth century through Liberal, positivist and criminological speeches. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the psychological discourse will be directed to elucidate the character of the Mexican or to give the coordinates to be located in a city that was constantly transformed because of the industrialization projects that had taken place during the Government of Porfirio Díaz. In this way, the psychology will be immersed in different speeches, with different semantic horizons, maintaining a complex relationship with the State or making intelligible the reality for some sectors of the population.

En México, durante el siglo XIX y principios del XX, la psicología era un término complejo, equívoco, que remitía lo mismo a un pensamiento filosófico —o, como lo designaban la élites liberales, metafísico— que a una nueva profundidad psíquica que la ciencia iba poniendo al descubierto. A partir del higienismo, el alienismo y las reflexiones en torno al sistema nervioso y el cerebro como base material de las funciones asignadas por la antigua filosofía al alma, comienza a configurarse un hombre psicológico, el cual devendrá objeto de múltiples estudios por parte de un nuevo especialista de la mente. Esta transición desde la filosofía hacia la ciencia implicará la aparición no solo de una disciplina debidamente diferenciada, orientada a estudiar los procesos mentales y la conducta del individuo y la población, sino la imbricación entre el profesional de la psique y el Estado. La articulación entre estos científicos del alma y las élites gobernantes será compleja, dando como resultado una circulación de ideas, teorías y proyectos de un ámbito al otro. Así, un saber psicológico participará en los proyectos de nación en México en el siglo XIX a través de discursos liberales, positivistas y criminológicos. A principios del siglo XX, el discurso psicológico se encaminará a dilucidar el carácter del mexicano o a dar las coordenadas para ubicarse en una ciudad que se transformaba constantemente debido a los proyectos de industrialización que habían tenido lugar durante el gobierno de Porfirio Díaz. De esta manera, la psicología estará inmersa en diferentes discursos, con horizontes semánticos distintos, manteniendo una relación compleja con el Estado o haciendo inteligible la realidad para algunos sectores de la población.
