Los Azufres geothermic area, part of the Zitacuaro volcanic complex, in Michoacán, México is located in the central part of México, 200 km NW of México City. A large number of natural hydrothermal features, such as hot springs and fumaroles, exist in the mountain area of Los Azufres. On the one hand, geothermal springs and fumaroles, investigated in Los Azufres, are a window that is representative of the environment prevalent in the early Earth. And, on the other hand, geothermal areas and the plants adapted in such area mimic the conditions on the early Earth. Geothermal areas are the habitat of a distinct and unique collection of plants. Some of these species are very valuable to science because of their adaptations to extreme temperatures and toxic environments. These kind of plants living in the geothermal areas must be able to survive extremes of temperature, acidity, alkalinity, turbidity and toxicity, i.e. pH of acidic water could reach up to 2.2 (pH of Verde lake is 2.6). Many species found in geothermal areas are adapted and flourish in the hostile conditions and become endemic to such areas. There were few studies about the geothermal plants. Indeed, little is known about the extent, uniqueness and diversity of the living plants living in pristine geothermal areas. There is an elevated amount of heavy and rare elements, as a result of the geothermal activity in Los Azufres. The distinctive environmental conditions associated with geothermal sites have allowed the establishment of some unusual and rare assemblages of plants. These plants have the ability to tolerate and accumulate large quantities of heavy and rare elements (hyper-accumulator plants). There are few studies that investigate the characteristics of such hyper-accumulator plants of heavy and rare metals in Los Azufres.

Un gran número de características hidrotermales naturales, como aguas termales y fumarolas, existe en la zona montañosa de Los Azufres. Por un lado, fuentes geotérmicas y fumarolas, investigados en Los Azufres, son una ventana que es representativa del entorno prevaleciente en la Tierra primitiva. Y, por otro lado, las áreas geotérmicas y las plantas adaptadas de tal área de imitar las condiciones en la Tierra primitiva. Áreas geotérmicas son el hábitat de una colección distinta y única de las plantas. Muchas de las especies que se encuentran en las áreas geotérmicas se adaptan y prosperan en las condiciones hostiles y se convierten en endémicas en esas zonas. Hubo pocos estudios sobre las plantas geotérmicas. De hecho, se sabe poco acerca de la extensión, singularidad y diversidad de las plantas vivas que viven en zonas geotérmicas de aguas cristalinas. Hay una cantidad elevada de elementos pesados y raros, como resultado de la actividad geotérmica en Los Azufres. Las condiciones ambientales distintivos asociados con los sitios geotérmicos han permitido el establecimiento de algunos conjuntos inusuales y raras de plantas. Estas plantas tienen la capacidad de tolerar y acumular grandes cantidades de elementos pesados y raros (plantas hiper - acumuladores). Existen pocos estudios que investigan las características de este tipo de plantas hiper - acumuladores de metales pesados y raros en Los Azufres.
