Criminalidad y desviación en Michoacán: la transgresión del ideal religioso y civil en Pátzcuaro, 1700-1750

Abstract

The investigation work presented below addresses the issue of criminality and deviation that the society of Patzcuaro had during the first half of the eighteenth century. Those behaviors that depart from the duty that, according to the religious and civil powers, should be carried out, are thoroughly analyzed. On the other hand, although the approach is directed to the transgressive conducts of public order, the practices that adhered to the guidelines established by the various authorities are not left aside; highlighting the contrast between the two. The criminality carried out in Patzcuaro occurred in the different social groups, whose action was protected in the gloom of the night, but also in broad daylight. On an ordinary day or in the middle of a holiday. Gambling, laziness and drunkenness were to some extent tolerated; while the illicit relations, the public and private fights, the homicides, were events that caused scandal in the neighbors and altered, at least during the fact and the subsequent days, the public tranquility. So, even though the city was immersed in a deep religiosity, it did not exempt its inhabitants from engaging in criminal behavior and deviating from Catholic Christian guidelines and civil statutes, committing actions that threatened life, good customs, public order and peace.

El trabajo de investigación que se presenta a continuación aborda el tema de la criminalidad y desviación que la sociedad de Pátzcuaro tuvo durante la primera mitad del siglo XVIII. Se analizan a fondo aquellos comportamientos que se apartaron del deber ser que, de acuerdo con las potestades religiosas y civiles, debía llevarse a cabo. Por otra parte, aunque el enfoque está dirigido a las conductas transgresoras del orden público, no se dejan de lado las prácticas que se apegaron a los lineamientos establecidos por las diversas autoridades; resaltando el contraste habido entre ambas. La criminalidad efectuada en Pátzcuaro se dio en los diferentes grupos sociales, cuya acción se vio amparada en las penumbras de la noche, pero también a plena luz. En un día ordinario o en medio de una festividad. Los juegos de azar, la vagancia y la embriaguez fueron en cierta medida tolerados; mientras que las relaciones ilícitas, las riñas públicas y privadas, los homicidios, fueron acontecimientos que causaron escándalo en los vecinos y alteraron, al menos durante el hecho y los días subsecuentes, la tranquilidad pública. De modo que, aun cuando la ciudad estaba inmersa en una profunda religiosidad, ello no exentó a sus habitantes de involucrarse en conductas criminales y desviantes de los lineamientos cristianos católicos y de los estatutos civiles, cometiendo acciones que atentaron contra la vida, las buenas costumbres, el orden y la paz públicos.
