Avocado production is the most important crop in terms of economic value in Michoacán. Therefore, the expansion of the crop has been exponential in the last 20 years in that state. This question the sustainability of the crop, in terms of its economic and social contribution, as well as its ecological impact, particularly in the regional water system. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of avocado production on the sustainability of the municipality of Tancítaro, Michoacán. Through the implementation of a Geographic Information System, the effect on the water system was evaluated; which quantified the amount of water retained and used for production. Meanwhile, the Z test determined the social impact of said production. The results obtained showed an alteration and impairment in the Hydric Balance (BH) equivalent to a loss of up to 57% of water used for cultivation. It is also appreciated that there is a minimum contribution to social welfare, only during a period of time, while in the economic aspect if the cost of water were considered, profit margins would be reduced by 13%.
La producción de aguacate es el cultivo más importante en términos de valor económico en Michoacán. Por lo tanto, la expansión del cultivo ha sido exponencial en los últimos 20 años en dicho estado. Esto cuestiona la sustentabilidad del cultivo, en términos de su aporte económico y social, así como el impacto ecológico, en particular en el sistema hídrico regional. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo determina los efectos de la producción de aguacate en la sustentabilidad del municipio de Tancítaro, Michoacán. Mediante la implementación de un Sistema de Información Geográfica se evalúo el efecto en el sistema hídrico; que cuantificó la cantidad de agua retenida y empleada para la producción. En tanto que mediante la prueba Z se determinó el impacto social de dicha producción. Los resultados obtenidos, mostraron una alteración y menoscabo en el Balance Hídrico (BH) equivalente a una pérdida de hasta 57% de agua se destina al cultivo. También se aprecia que hay un aporte mínimo al bienestar social, solo durante un período de tiempo, en tanto que en el aspecto económico si se contemplara el costo del agua, los márgenes de beneficio se reducirían en 13%.
