Diabetes and its complications are part of the group of chronic degenerative diseases, which have a significant health problem worldwide. Plants such as Spathodea campanulata, are known in traditional African medicine for their hypoglycemic efficacy in the treatment of diabetes. Objective. To assess the effect of oral administration of Spathodea hypoglycemic campanulata in rats with type 2 diabetes and assess the neuroprotective effect in pyramidal neurons of the CA1 of the hippocampus. Materials and methods. Aqueous (EAQSC), acetonic (EASC) and alcoholic extract (EOHSC) were obtained from Spathodea campanulata leaves. The content of phenols, polyphenols, and flavonoids was quantified. The antioxidant activity was evaluated In vitro. Male Wistar rats (from 100g) were used. The animals were randomized into groups (n = 6): Healthy and diabetic with different extracts. Histological analysis of brains was performed to evaluate the population of CA1 pyramidal neurons of the hippocampus. The results were analyzed by ANOVA analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey test. Results. The EAQSC has a medium concentration of secondary metabolites. In antioxidant capacity, the EAQSC and the EASC have a high and the EOHSC medium anti-radical efficiency.
