The purpose of this research is to identify the problems involved in the teaching and learning of number fractions at primary level. We present the results of an investigation carried out with fifth grade primary pupils at the Instituto Jefferson de Morelia, using the “Rational Number Project”, a series of lessons designed in the USA. The methodology used in this study was based on Hagelgans’ “Cooperative Learning Groups” (1995). Students´ responses were analyzed in the framework of constructivist theories which support the use of concrete materials for the learning of fractions. The author of this study was also the teacher of the group of students that participated in the research.
