Anxiety can be highly disabling in everyday life. Several cognitive theories and empirical studies have tried to explain the relationship between anxiety and various cognitive processes. However, the effects that anxiety has on attention and executive functioning remain nuclear. It has been proposed that anxiety decreases the efficiency of attentional networks, as well as executive functioning. In this sense, the objective of the present investigation was to compare the performance of the attentional networks and Inhibitory control among people with a high and low trait anxiety. In this study, 60 people participated, and were divided into two groups, according to their scores on the STAI-Trait. The most important results of the present investigation were that no significant differences were found in the efficiency of the attentional networks, between the group with high trait anxiety and the group with low trait anxiety. On the other hand, significant differences were observed in the inhibition function, where, the group with high trait anxiety, presented a lower efficiency compared to the group with low trait anxiety. From what has been observed, it is concluded that anxiety could be related to a decrease in the efficiency of the inhibition function, consistent with the attentional control theory.
