The management of biological sludge in Mexico can be made more efficient and environmentally friendly, solving the two main problems that afflict them, the economic and public health, which can be achieved through two main methods: reduce the production of sludge and make the disposal and reuse of these with appropriate pretreatment. The present work consists on determining the conditions that allow reducing the production of biological sludge in a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) of the activated sludge type, using a mathematical model for the design of WWTP. Different operating conditions will be analyzed according to the Organic Load, evaluating the impact of this variable on the production of sludge. The hypothesis is that the lower the organic load, the lower the sludge production. The biological sludge is an inevitable residue of the process of treatment of the residual waters, for that reason it is important to establish guidelines that make more efficient their handling, for this the data of characterization of the residual waters in influent and effluent will be obtained, in addition to the rate of production of sludge of a real PTAR. Due to the complexity involved in the design of WWTP, there is a great need for technologies that provide support to the designer to achieve an adequate selection of the processes (Nagl et al., 2002). In this case, a model of the WWTP will be elaborated and its operation will be simulated, analyzing the organic load. Once the model is fed, it will be calibrated and validated with the water characterization data and with the biological sludge production rate at the WWTP, thus allowing the determination of the appropriate organic load values.
