The changes inherent in the aging process influence good nutrition. In our environment, there is no instrument that is not accessible to the family doctor to perform an adequate Nutritional Screening focused specifically on the elderly. Due to the need to have a reliable, easy to apply, accessible and economical instrument to determine the Nutritional Risk of the elderly, a Nutrition Screening instrument was designed with the purpose of being used in primary care clinics. OBJECTIVE: To determine the reliability of the Nutrition Screening tool to assess the Nutritional Risk of older adults in rural areas. MATERIAL AND METHODS.- This was a cross-sectional, observational and descriptive survey-type study. A Nutrition Screening tool was applied, with items selected by nutrition experts based on various internationally validated forms to determine the Nutritional Risk and functional status of the older adult. It was applied to 60 seniors assigned to HR No. 30 of the IMSS-Oportunidades. Cronbach's alpha was used to determine instrument reliability. We also correlated the results with BMI and Subjective Global Valuation. RESULTS.- Cronbach's alpha was .733 including four items, indicating that it is a reliable instrument. We found 20% of older adults with Nutritional Risk and 80% without Nutritional Risk. The Nutritional Risk associated to Sub-Global Assessment showed 25% with Nutritional Risk and malnutrition. Regarding the relation of Nutritional Risk with BMI, it was observed that only 6.7% of the elderly had a normal BMI. There was no association between Nutritional Risk and BMI. CONCLUSIONS - The instrument of Nutritional Screening is reliable for the evaluation of the Nutritional Risk of the elderly in rural areas.
Los cambios inherentes al proceso de envejecimiento influyen contra una buena nutrición. En nuestro medio no se cuenta con ningún instrumento que no sea accesible al médico familiar para realizar un Tamizaje Nutricional adecuado enfocado específicamente a los adultos mayores. Debido a la necesidad de contar con un instrumento confiable, de fácil aplicación, accesible y económico para determinar el Riesgo Nutricional del adulto mayor se diseñó un instrumento de Tamizaje Nutricional con la finalidad de ser utilizado en los consultorios de atención primaria. OBJETIVO. - Determinar la fiabilidad del instrumento de Tamizaje Nutricional para valorar el Riesgo Nutricional de los adultos mayores en el medio rural. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS. - Se trató de un estudio transversal, observacional y descriptivo, tipo encuesta. Se aplicó un instrumento de Tamizaje Nutricional, con ítems seleccionados por expertos en nutrición en base a diversos formularios validados internacionalmente para determinar el Riesgo Nutricional y estado funcional del adulto mayor. Se aplicó a 60 adultos mayores adscritos al HR No. 30 del IMSS-Oportunidades. Para determinar la fiabilidad de instrumentos se utilizó el Alfa de Cronbach. Además, se correlacionó los resultados con IMC y Valoración Global Subjetiva. RESULTADOS. - El alfa de Cronbach fue de .733 incluyendo cuatro ítems, lo cual indica que es un instrumento confiable. Se encontró un 20% de adultos mayores con Riesgo Nutricional y un 80% sin Riesgo Nutricional. El Riesgo Nutricional asociado a la Valoración Global Subjetiva mostró un 25% con Riesgo Nutricional y desnutrición. En cuanto a la relación de Riesgo Nutricional con IMC, se observó que sólo un 6.7% de los adultos mayores tuvieron un IMC normal. No se encontró asociación entre Riesgo Nutricional y el IMC. CONCLUSIONES. - El instrumento de Tamizaje Nutricional es fiable para la valoración del Riesgo Nutricional del adulto mayor en el medio rural.
