The capital economy has caused the devastation of natural resources, which are usually run by peasant and indigenous societies throughout the Mexican territory. These communities are responsible for the care and conservation of these resources, so they have had to organize themselves and face collective action dilemmas that interfere with that purpose. Such is the case of the community of Cherán, Michoacán, who managed to resume their uses and customs, to face the environmental devastation that afflicted them, and with this to reappropriate their territory; reconstitute their social fabric as well as redesign their institutions to a system of self-government. So, this thesis identifies in an integral way the elements that are necessary in the institutional redesign of a system of self-government, as well as the role of users in terms of the level of cooperation to conserve a resource of common use to overcome conflicts of collective action and achieve sustainability over time. The methodology and the theoretical basis of this work is based on the theory of games and collective action, especially with the legacy of the Nobel prize for economics, Elinor Ostrom. So, from the results it is asserted that the community of Cherán as an autonomous entity is at a crucial point to define the sustainability of its territory.
