Abstract

El deterioro del nivel de vida de la mayor parte del planeta como resultado de la etapa ultraconservadora por la que hemos atravesado durante los últimos decenios del siglo XX, que está mermando a sectores cada vez más amplios de las capas medias, en medio de lo que algunos han denominado la «globalización de la pobreza» 1 es alarmante; la amenaza del desempleo es una preocupación presente tanto en los países pobres como en los países desarrollados; la fragmentación social y organizativa «ha alcanzado su nivel máximo, mientras los sueños por la construcción de una nueva sociedad se han reducido a su expresión más tímida.» 2 Hace catorce años, Sergio Zermeño observaba con clarividencia: «...los mexicanos, como otros pueblos de América Latina (sobre todo los de gran contenido indígena, me atrevería a decir), estamos abonando, quizás no muy conscientemente, un campo de cultivo del verticalismo en donde la ideología del "tránsito a la democracia" podría quedar reducida a un mero mecanismo psicoanalítico de negación de un entorno que nos avasalla. Mientras eso sucede, uno de cada diez habitantes juega al ciudadano, al consumidor, al elector; y el ministerio de información (el monopolio televisivo) quiere hacer creer al resto que para allá vamos todos, ahora que dejemos atrás los sacrificios del ajuste y la globalización. También, mientras esto sucede, el presidente Zedillo no atina a interpretar su época y se consume en medio del desorden y el caos al que agrega su neoliberal e inocente "dejar pasar".
