Due to depletion of fossil fuels in the near future, new energy alternatives need to be developed. Among these, the synthesis of biodiesel using friendly catalysts to the environment is very attractive. This synthesis is commonly performed by the transesterification of fats or oils with an alcohol and in presence of a strong base or acid catalyst. Sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide are typically used as catalysts, however, they are corrosive, difficult to handle and after all, environmentally negative. The use of a strong base or acid solid catalyst is more attractive and could decrease the cost of production of biodiesel. In the present research, chicken bone waste was treated and used as catalyst for this synthesis. A complete conversion was observed when the reaction was performed during 3 h, at 70 °C, using 4 g of catalyst, 20 ml of methanol and 5 g of oil. Our results demonstrate the transformation of a waste to valuable products.
