La transformación del territorio y la arquitectura patrimonial a partir del turismo religioso y las peregrinaciones: el municipio de Tepatitlán, Jalisco como estudio de caso

Abstract

The religious tourism and the pilgrimages are social phenomena that have centuries of antiquity all over the world, these are also intimate linked to the places from the departure or the ones that are the destiny. Even though the subjects who perform these actions are the main receivers of the pilgrim terminology, sometimes this concept may be very ambiguous because the subjects can be named as a secular tourist (the one who doesn’t participate in activities with religious meaning) or pious tourist (the one who purposely participates in activities with religious meaning), but in some occasions, the same subject could be both. In the municipality of Tepatitlan de Morelos, on the Mexican state of Jalisco, we can found the cult to El Señor de la Misericordia (Lord of Mercy), an oak figure carved into a crucifix, which is considered the patron saint of the city, which has its origins in the first half of the nineteenth century. This phenomenon has survived through time, due to the strong flow of pilgrim travelers and an incipient religious tourism. Although the different pilgrimages have evolved, they have traditionally been motivated by faith. Tradition that surrounds the faith to El Señor de la Misericordia, it had given foundation to a number of observable phenomena, among which stand out the construction of religious architecture with patrimonial value, the consolidation of two pilgrimage routes in which thousands of people participate each year, going through several municipalities near Tepatitlan. Because of the routes, it had been built a series of landmarks to help guide the pilgrims to their destiny.

El turismo religioso y las peregrinaciones son fenómenos sociales existentes desde hace siglos en todo el mundo, mismos que se encuentran íntimamente ligados a los destinos desde los que se parte o hacia los que se pretende llegar. Asimismo, aunque los sujetos que ejercen estas acciones son los principales acreedores al término de peregrino, en ocasiones, este nombramiento puede ser tan amplio que el sujeto va desde un turista secular (aquel que no participa de actividades con enfoque religioso) hasta un turista piadoso (el que da un sentido totalmente religioso a sus actividades), pudiéndose dar el caso de sujetos que califiquen como ambos. En el municipio de Tepatitlán de Morelos, en el estado de Jalisco, encontramos el culto al Señor de la Misericordia, una figura de encino tallado en un crucifijo, que es considerado el santo patrono de la ciudad, mismo que tiene sus orígenes en la primera mitad del siglo XIX. Este fenómeno ha pervivido a través del tiempo, por los fuertes flujos de viajeros peregrinos y un incipiente turismo religioso. Aunque las distintas peregrinaciones han ido evolucionando, tradicionalmente se han mantenido motivadas por fe. La tradición que engloba el culto al Señor de la Misericordia, ha dado paso a una serie de fenómenos observables, entre los que destacan la construcción de arquitectura religiosa con valor patrimonial, la consolidación de dos rutas de peregrinación con una afluencia de miles de personas por año, a través de varios municipios cercanos a Tepatitlán. Por consecuencia de estas rutas, también se han erigido una serie de hitos construidos que ayudan a guiar el camino que recorren los peregrinos, así como el sitio de destino.
